There are any number of sites out there which go into detail covering Topps' baseball sets over the years, but none seemed to present the information I wanted to see the most in the way I wanted to see it, so I decided to see if I could develop some pages of my own that represent my own interests as well as, hopefully, those of others as well.
Links below will take you to pages devoted to the specific year's set. One thing you won't find here are checklists - those are all over the internet, and each page contains a link to that set's checklist at the Trading Card Database.
I began collecting in 4th grade in 1978, so the personal anecdotes these pages contain reflect that fact. From 1978 on up, they represent the perspective of someone collecting each set as it was issued, and from 1977 on back, the perspective of someone trying to acquire older cards and building sets years, sometimes many years, after they were first issued.
I don't talk at all about card values on these pages. I may mention that some cards are rarer than others or that some carry premiums when looking to buy because of scarcity or some other factor, but values can fluxuate and I'd rather not have to worry about updating that sort of detail regularly.
Presently, the pages cover 1966-1991, inclusive. I have stopped there for now because 1) 1966 is currently the oldest complete set I own, and 2) 1991 was the last set to be printed on traditional cardboard and marketed with gum. In 1992, Topps switched to white paper stock and eliminated gum from packs. For me, and perhaps others, this marked the passing of one era and the beginning of another.
I am always in search of information and illustrations regarding the packaging of these sets and in images of uncut printing sheets. If you have any to provide, please reach out to me via the Contact button above.
